I'm honored to be November's Featured Artist!
Joy Kelso is a local Ceramic Artist working at Modern Montana Makerie (her personal studio) in Helena, MT. You may also recognize her as our new Store Owner!
She is known mostly for her minimal depictions of the American West, most notably her bison sculpture, Montoya. Bison are the only animals on earth to run towards a storm when sensing a shift in the weather-the quickest and most effective way to go through it. Rehabilitation units in the Army often feature bison as an emblem of resilience. Joy chose a bison as her inspiration, as nod to her service in the US Army as a Combat Medic with a PTSD diagnosis.
This show explores a new influence-how to put her stuff on the wall!
She has been experimenting with her fiber arts interests, combing ceramics and bison fiber, picking frames that would have been valued in the American West, as well as some collage quilting inspired by the Western women that have come before her.

Joy lives, works & plays in Helena, and you can find Joy knitting in her off-time, with her lil’ dog, Harper.
